quasicrystal 1 tile

Flower-like rosettes and stars arranged in a pattern that feels ordered but never quite repeats the way a grid does. The look sits somewhere between Islamic star ornament, kaleidoscopes and the diffraction images of real quasicrystals.

The image is a sum of several plane waves, each rotated by an equal angle — five, seven or eight directions instead of the four or six that tile the plane periodically. The full field never repeats exactly; on tilejar a fragment of it is mirrored into a seamless tile, so you keep the rosettes while gaining a clean repeat.

Every tile on tilejar starts as a crop of a larger image, which is then mirrored with a wallpaper symmetry (pmm, p4m or p6m) so it repeats without seams. Download it as a PNG or open its recipe in the generator.
